The fifth and final patch of this summer’s Nova update has been released! It contains the 5th area of Arcane River, Morass, the Swamp of Memory, as well as a newly revamped Papulatus, updated boss rewards, and some skill balancing.

Here are the other two world selection screens for this patch.

Here’s the Maple Update Info Centre video.

    [IMG] Morass, Swamp of Memory

    [IMG] [IMG]
The new area of Arcane River, the Swamp of Memory, Morass, has been added.

    • Characters who are level 230 or higher and have completed the ‘Forest of Regained Harmony’ quest in Arcana can talk to the Flying Fish in the Four Path Cave to fly to Morass.
    • In Morass, you will meet the girl who caused Arcana to fall into chaos, Tana.
[IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
Morass is a swamp that changes based on the memory of those who enter it. As a survival technique, the Erdas here imitate the appearance of enemies from your own memories. The Flying Fish actually gets some funny dialogue saying it is an Erda that likes being a fish with giant wings, which is really whimsical even in its own eyes (until the player tells it that flying fish exist in Maple World already).

Tana, who has no memories, is being escorted by Arkarium who promises the Great One will stop her pain. She caused the entire surrounding area to react and take the form of her memories. The Flying Fish explains that it happened due to her immense power over Erda, even stronger than the Black Mage who passed by before her. (Note: it’s still a coral forest, it just took the appearance of Tana’s memories).

Moras’ Coral Forest is a dangerous place, you become a part of your memory and forget reality. As the player enters, you become a character called Shay who was present in Tana’s past in Trueffet.

In the 52nd year of Hekaton’s reign, in Trueffet Square, there was an accident when they were installing an Anti-Magic Stone. It fell and exploded, causing everyone to disappear, except for a single girl who appeared out of the rubble with a strange black light. She was taken away by the guards and became just a rumour… a reaper.

In the 54th year of Hekaton’s reign, the player found out that the Director of the Laboratory was none other than Arkarium, the High Priest of the goddess. Tana, who was being held and experimented on in Trueffet’s dungeon had no memories except for her name and the faint desire of something.

The researchers performed excruciating experiments on her body which seemed to heal itself afterwards. They believed that even though she had human consciousness and behaviour, she was only an inanimate object with no feelings, desires, or memories. The player didn’t seem convinced so they were asked to get the research documents from September 18 of the 53rd year.

While looking for them, the player came across other entries. One from March 17 of the 52nd year states that “It was called Subject 618. After 617 attempts to gain the power of immortality, we have finally found a valuable object. Being able to quickly heal small scratches was an important clue to overcome death. I am thrilled. We are finally beginning to climb God’s Tower.”

One from May 13 of the 52nd year states “Regardless of the existence of the soul, it seems that memories and emotions are based on the body. As her body disappears, she loses more and more. What’s left of her… only the disappearing echo of a memory of something she used to want.”

One from September 17 of the 53rd year states “One year after finding 618, I am exhausted from all my research. I thought the subject’s memories could return if given a small clue. She doesn’t even remember her own name. After much thought, I have decided to take a risk. That is, I will give stimulus to the subject over the critical point.”

The final entry on September 18 of the 53rd year states “The results of the experiment were… shocking. The subject exploded, with the same flash as when an Anti Magic Stone breaks. As a result, six researchers disappeared without a trace in front of my very eyes. She stood in front of us and said ‘My name… Tana’. It was an extremely calm tone.”

The documents were written by the previous director, who resigned after the explosion incident. He left after saying these final words. “This is neither the domain of magic nor the domain of science. The existence of more than human, the domain of God. We are tampering with something that we shouldn’t touch.”

Jean, who was saved from the explosion 2 years ago by Tana, finally found her by sneaking into the dungeon. After realizing he couldn’t free her from her chains, he continued to visit her. He read her the story of a beautiful magic princess locked in a tower and brought her food.

As the experiments continued, the researchers could not figure out how to solve the problem of rejection. One day, the King of Kritias, Hekaton, arrived in a rage and ordered them to increase the power past the limit. A giant explosion occurred yet Hekaton was unharmed, except for a strange aura around his body. One of the researchers said that he was already not a human but a monster. Hekaton ordered Arkarium to complete the experiment as a certain day was coming soon, and if he failed he would be taken care of.

In the player’s memoirs from that time, it stated that the people of Kritias called Hekaton the Great King. He was strong, wise, generous, and had superior magical knowledge. It is no exaggeration to say that Kritias’ revival began with him. However, unlike the city which grew and prospered, his body gradually grew old and sick.

The researchers believed that success or failure, either would result in the subject disappearing entirely. As Tana was about to explode once more, Jean hugged her and told her he would be by her side. The tremors stopped and the reaction ended. He told her the end of the story, the princess is saved by a knight. Although Tana said she had no knight, Jean said that she wasn’t a princess anyways and promises to save her. Tana smiled for the first time.

Eventually, both their escape and the experiment failed. This led to the end of Kritias. However, the Flying Fish tells the player that they can help Jean and Tana escape to see her true goals in the memory.

The next set of memoirs detailed how the experiments done on Tana were trying to redirect her power to the researchers. However, these researchers’ bodies disappeared. One day, they went into the lower floors of the dungeon and found their experiments’ byproducts. The souls of the researchers who disappeared desperately clung to the objects around them, creating monsters. The researchers agreed to turn a blind eye to what was happening and closed off the lower floors. Over the years, it became overrun with monsters.

In the Closed Area, the player met up with Jean to try to save Tana. His first request was to find a jewel that he dropped, as it would be a gift to the girl who was to be his bride. It was an Anti Magic Stone Necklace. Although extremely dangerous, he said the most beautiful roses have the most thorns, just like Tana.

Jean’s plan was to undo her chains and quickly run away before the guards came. When the experiments began, the magic blocking enchantments on the castle came undone so that was their chance. He said he had a getaway prepared since the moment he first met Tana.

In the Closed Area, Jean and the player were confronted by Arkarium who said he wanted to help Tana escape. He said that Tana’s heart was reason the ritual was not succeeding, she was rejecting it. As they prepared, Arkarium warned that after a certain point, there was no stopping it. Either Tana’s ritual would succeed or her body would decay and regenerate endlessly.

On the final day, Jean appeared in the dungeon with the note that Shay left him, talking about the eye of purple light on it. Before the player could react, the real Arkarium appeared and laughed, saying that a priest of time would not allow themselves to be dragged into the past.

Arkarium shouted that there was an intruder (which originally the brainwashed Shay did) and Hekaton realized that Jean was the key that Arkarium mentioned to him before. He ordered his guards to strike down Jean. With his last breath, he apologized to Tana that he couldn’t keep his promise and become a great knight.

At this point, Tana’s rejection ended and the ritual began. Hekaton was in the process of becoming a god. But the great Jean always had a second plan. He knew Tana might forget about him but he said she should create new and better memories. She broke the Anti Magic Stone Necklace that he was going to give her and cursed Hekaton, saying she would gladly endure endless pain to do so. Hekaton lost his body and became a true monster.

Arkarium (the real one from outside the memory world) said that he was extremely surprised when this happened in the past. He said that he knew the ritual would fail, but was curious to find out how, so he planned everything from the very beginning.

The failed ritual caused a giant time rift to open up, pulling all of Kritias into the future. A dark power had noticed Tana after this… the Black Mage, and he invaded Kritias. Ironically, Hekaton was most human in his final moments. He evacuated all the people inside Trueffet before his body disappeared.

At the other magic circle that Arkarium prepared, he said how his past self thought Tana’s powers were only immortality. It wasn’t until he met the Great One that he realized she could control Erda, the source of all life. Jealous, he wanted to take it for himself.

As the player tried to defeat Arkarium while he was draining Tana’s power, she remembered Jean’s words. Stopping the ritual, she used her power of Erda to defeat Arkarium and his monsters.

In the past, Tana hid her existence and slept, to be woken when the time was ready. However, the Black Mage and his commanders continued their invasion of Kritias to find any traces of her location.

Returning to the swamp of Morass, the player and the Flying Fish (now stuck in the form of Jean) discussed what they thought Tana’s goal was. The only way to end eternal pain… returning the world to nothing. However, unbeknownst to them, Tana’s actual goal is to stop the Black Mage.

Back in the memory world, the barely surviving Arkarium awaited the memory’s Black Mage so he could regain his strength and escape. However, the Black Mage says “Arkarium… the Black Mage wanted me to tell you this… Good work… but this is the end.” and he destroys him.

Jean (the Flying Fish) says he can no longer bring the player to the Black Mage. He says he can go back into the swamp and try to look for a way to reverse the changes to his body, so he tells the player to wait for his message.

The final entry in the memoirs appears. The writer talked about how Kritias became a wreck and many people were sacrificed. As a person involved, they lost their home to return to. They covered up their face and gave up their name. He promised to live the rest of his life for those who were sacrificed.

    Time to Papulatus

[IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
The boss Papulatus’ battle patterns have been renewed.

    • A variety of actions and new attack patterns have been added. New mechanical devices have been installed at the base of the clock tower to disrupt characters.
    • The entry methods are the same as before. You can enter from the base of the clock tower on the lowest floor.
    • To summon Papulatus, you will need a Piece of the Dimensional Crack, which can be received from the NPC Flo in the Passage of Time after completing related quests.
[IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
    • Easy Mode and Chaos Mode have been added.
    • You can enter Easy/Normal Mode 1 time per day (the limit is shared between them). You can clear Chaos Mode 1 time per week.
    • The existing Papulatus in Mu Lung Dojo and Cross Hunter will keep the old patterns.

Here’s a video of a player showing off the various mechanics of the fight. I think I figured out most of them but note that the information might be a little incorrect since I haven’t actually fought him yet.

    Both Phases

Along the top of the map, there will be crane machines that will periodically move up and down. If you are caught by them, you will be stunned in place for a certain period of time.

    [IMG][IMG][IMG]

There will be red and blue lasers on two sides of the clock which will rotate in place. If the two lasers touch, they will activate a screen shatter effect (like Arkarium) that one shots everyone. You need to block the lasers with your characters to avoid this.

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
At the top of the screen, below the timer, there is a red clock that starts ticking down from 3:00 minutes. Once it hits 0, Papulatus will summon falling winding keys (like Magnus meteors). They will fall randomly for 30 seconds. I’m not sure if they both one shot or not but there’s two kinds, yellow and purple.

    Phase 1

    [IMG] [IMG]
Papulatus can summon blue clocks on the ground which will explode after a short time and one-shot anyone on it. You need to avoid these horizontally as they will hit people even if they’re on platforms above it.

Papulatus can create time rifts on the ground which will one-shot anyone standing in them until they disappear. You can avoid them by standing on the platforms above them or by moving away from them.

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
You and Papulatus will have a clock over your heads. If that clock hits 0, your skills will be sealed for a certain period of time. To avoid this, you must defeat the Tick Tocks and Chronos around the map and loot the clocks they drop which can either double or halve the remaining time.

[IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
After you defeat the first phase, Papulatus will enter his sleeping mode. During this time, the clock in the middle will be divided into 6 sections with numbers such as 0%/1%/10%/100%. After a certain period of time, Papulatus will reappear and heal himself based on the sum of the remaining sections of the clock. To avoid this, you must defeat the Dark Stars around the map and loot the drops they have to advance the clock 10/30/50 minutes/2/4/9 hours and get rid of the sections by landing on them.

    Phase 2

Papulatus’ second phase uses a projectile attack where he throws a gear at you (don’t think this one shots).

Papulatus will summon a bunch of Other World’s Papulatus which are weaker and will fly around and attack you.

He can absorb them to heal HP like Von Leon (1m HP per in Easy, 40m per in Normal, and 20% per in Chaos).

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
Papulatus can use a time bomb similar to Urus and Lucid, which will divide the damage among nearby party members.

    [IMG] [IMG]
Papulatus can also forcefully teleport you (like Chaos Von Bon).

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
New Papulatus related rewards have been added.

    • Papulatus Mark (8 all stats, 1 attack/magic attack, 150 defense, 5 slots, tradeable until equipped, Lv. 145, eye accessory, part of the Boss Accessory set)
    • Papulatus’ Clock Chair (you can invite other characters to sit in the chair’s arms with you)
    • Papulatus’ Soul Fragment
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
[IMG][IMG] Papulatus’ Soul has been added.

    • [IMG] Ruler of Space: Consumes 200 Soul to deal 1000%/1200% damage 1 time on up to 5/6 enemies. Cooldown: 120 seconds.
    • [IMG] Ruler of Time: Deals 2000%/2400% damage 1 time on up to 15 enemies. Cooldown: 120 seconds.
    [IMG] [IMG]
Papulatus’ soul has been added to the Soul Collector. (Woah, is it just me that only now realized there are 3 Papulatus things inside the clock? I didn’t even notice them in Papulatus’ existing animations!)

    Normal: Ruler of dimensions!
    Hidden: Yearning…
